English Speaking Skills: The Job Interview as an Audition – Part 2
When you are interviewing for a job, the frame of being in an audition will focus you and help you to stand out from other job applicants. Practice these tips during your rehearsal for the interview:
- State or show the not-obvious. Create an intriguing statement about yourself. For example, a woman expecting to be told “Tell us a bit about yourself,” ( the most popular interview question), replied, “ I think I should tell you I’m a non-conforming conformist.” She explained what she meant and wound up getting the job.
- Think and Show Outside the Usual: Think about a visual that really represents what you can do. Perhaps a photo taken at an event you organized. If you have nothing that symbolizes your capabilities, look for a pattern not easily apparent in your resume. Be prepared to talk about that interest or talent, apart from your official work history.
- Get to television or YouTube interviews: Watch interviews and make note of what works. Look for traits that make people likeable and competent. Research indicates that people who use gestures are perceived as being more social. Research also indicates that people who speak clearly are perceived as being 30% smarter.

English Speaking Skills: A Job Interview as an Audition
A great tip for job interviewing : Think of the job interview as an audition. Most people put lots of energy into getting an interview. But many fall down during the actual interview. Why? Poor planning and a lack of practice.
What to do? Stage a rehearsal for your job interview. Get a friend or family member to play the role of the interviewer and stay with that role from start to finish. Then use tips from interview experts and trainers:
- Learn all you can about the organization in advance. Share this with your mock interviewer. She can use the notes you made to give you practice in describing the organization you are going to interview with.
- Be ready for “Tell me about yourself,” Have an elevator speech ready in case they want a brief overview of your career. If you are internationally born or born in the US, tell them where you were born or where you grew up. The personal information helps to establish a rapport and satisfy curiosity.
- Know your lines: Actors do it, and you should do it too. Memorize a few short quotes and have them ready. They will help you respond in a memorable manner to questions.

English Communication: The Clarity is Simple
English Communication: The Clarity is Simple
All of life is relationship. Love, compassion, helping, encouraging. Hope, faith.
A year ago, April 2, on his birthday, my beloved passed.
I, more than anyone, know which words were his. Which ideas sprang from his fertile mind. Where the science is that he was chief architect for. Our evolution springs forth from all that.
Our mission is to help others communicate more clearly in English. For what purpose? So that those whom we help may live a more fulfilling life in relationship– wherever they are, whatever they do. And so that they may, through their clear communication in English, help others.
One of my students this week said: It is all so simple — love. It is all about love.
So shall we go forth.
